Instant Messaging Technology on Nokia

Mobile Instant Messaging
You may already use an instant messaging service on your PC. Now you can take advantage of instant messaging on your Nokia phone.

What You Get with Mobile Instant Messaging
  • Chat in real time with your contacts, whether they're online at a PC or also using instant messenger on a phone - it works mobile-to-mobile, mobile-to-PC, and PC-to-mobile
  • If you have to dash from your PC but want to keep a conversation going, just switch on instant messaging in your mobile while you're still logged on
  • See instantly if your contacts are online and available
  • Invite several people to one conversation - very helpful when you're making movie plans or scheduling meetings
With some phones, instant messaging works closely with Presence - you can see where your friends are, what they're doing, and send them a message they can respond to right away

How it Works
To use instant messaging, you'll need a username and password from an online IM service, and the rest depends on your phone and operator. Some operators support specific software. Some phones have an application built-in, and with others you can download an independent Java™ application.
You may use IM by connecting to the Internet (over WAP, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA or other network connection), or you may also send and receive messages by SMS.

Getting Instant Messaging
Many network operators have special support for instant messaging services. They can provide you with applications and instructions on how to use them. If you’re already familiar with popular instant messaging programs for PC, you’ll find the interface very similar.

Some Nokia phones come with instant messaging applications pre-installed. In this case, developers can tweak these applications so that they work seamlessly with the phone’s interface and technological capabilities. If your Nokia phone doesn’t have pre-installed software, you can try downloading a Java™ application – several are easily available, each with different features. A single application can be compatible with several major IM clients. Your operator's charges depend on which method you're using, and how they set their own tariffs.

Using Instant Messaging
You should be able to see your list of contacts or “buddy list” as soon as you’re connected. You’ll also see their status – whether they’re online or not. They might also have some variations on their status like “Away” or “At Lunch,” so you know there’s a reason if they don’t answer right away.

Simply connect to your network, choose a contact, type a message, and your message is sent to your friend instantly. Because you’re already connected to the Internet (through GPRS or other connection), there’s virtually no lag between sending and receiving.
SMS: A Solution for Simpler Phones
Some phones may not be compatible with IM software, so some operators have a neat solution: an instant message sent to your username will be forwarded to your phone as an SMS message. Simply reply to the SMS message and it’s sent to their instant messaging program. It’s not quite as “instant” as the more advanced version, but it’s still an innovative way to keep in touch.

Mobile Browsing Technology on Nokia

Get Online with WAP, XHTML, or HTML
A mobile browser is simply any program that lets you access and read content on a network from a mobile device - usually the Internet or some other mobile network service. As more phones on the market boast high network connection speeds and color screens, mobile browsing is becoming more common (and a lot better-looking!)

What You Can Do with Mobile Browsers

Many new Nokia models come with an integrated XHTML or even HTML mobile browser, giving you the chance to surf without being chained to a desktop computer. Today's mobile browsers give you richer colors and faster browsing than the original mobile browsers, and most importantly, a way to access the Web at your fingertips. Considering the no-frills WAP sites that started off mobile browsing, the technology has come a long way.
How It Works
In order to browse with a mobile phone, you need to have a phone with a browser (either one that's built in or downloaded), a subscription from your network operator to a data service (GSM data, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, etc), and the correct settings on your phone. Then it's up to other companies and individuals to build the sites and services you can browse.

Nokia Data Synchronization

Losing your Nokia phone can be a disaster if you lose all your contacts, too. Backing up your data is a smart thing to do, period. Keep your calendar, contacts, tasks and email up-to-date, and make backups of your phone info.
What You Can Do With Data Sync
  • Keep track of your personal and professional appointments and info: calendar, email, company files, customer details and other contacts, to-do lists...
  • Remote synchronization of your personal data over a mobile network connection - even when connecting to a secure enterprise network
  • If you have more than one phone, transfer contacts and data between them
  • Get important messages and files via email - even set it up to check for messages periodically
  • If you happen to lose your phone, you'll have a backup of all your contacts on your PC

How Nokia Data Synchronization Works
Nokia's synchronization technology is based on OMA Data Sync (OMA = Open Mobile Alliance), an open technology that is considered an industry standard. Making sure Nokia's devices are compatible with many manufacturers' software, hardware, and servers saves a lot of headaches. OMA Data Synchronization is a direct evolution from SyncML Data Synchronization.
Synchronization works in two different ways: remote synchronization (when the two devices are too far away from each other for cables or local wireless connections), and local synchronization.
Remote Synchronization
This is used for two devices that are too far away for cables or local wireless connections. OMA Data Sync works over HTTP in wide-area networks like Internet, WCDMA, GPRS, and GSM and can connect you to an Internet address book, corporate calendar, company database or other files and applications. And because OMA Data Sync is the leading protocol for wireless synchronization, it works with many services and programs.

Local Synchronization
Local synchronization works between two devices in close proximity (a mobile phone and a laptop, for example), and can be done using a cable or wireless connection (Bluetooth or infrared), depending on the capabilities of both devices. With a PC, use PC Suite software to connect your phone to your PC, then transfer the information you want: synchronize your Outlook calendar, transfer your images to your PC to clear up space on your phone, or transfer data from the PC to your phone, for example.

WCDMA Technology on Nokia

3G Has Arrived
Third-generation mobile telephony or 3G networks such as WCDMA (Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System) allow for faster data transfer than GPRS and EDGE, and also let you talk while you transfer data.

Advantages of WCDMA
WCDMA technology gives you a faster data connection in mobile networks: currently up to 384 kbps.. In future generations of WCDMA technology, this may increase up to even 10 Mbps.
You can do all of the usual activities: send SMS or MMS messages, download games and ringing tones, synchronize your phone with your PC calendar or corporate intranet, and browse the Internet. WCDMA is also fast enough for video streaming.
With GPRS or EDGE phones, you can't do these things while talking. WCDMA is based on a different technology that lets you hold simultaneous voice and data connections, so you can send images and check your email while you're on the phone.
Like GPRS and EDGE, you're billed for data transferred, not for time connected, so you can be connected just about all the time.
Please check the availability of the 3G service with your network operator and/or service provider.

How WCDMA Works
Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access is a relatively new technology for accessing radio channels (where data is exchanged) with mobile devices.

Background: FM Radio
For a quick explanation, let's first look at a familiar radio scenario. FM radio stations are all assigned frequencies (like 95.6, 102.1, and so on). Stations can have the same frequency as long as there is sufficient distance between them. Have you ever been driving along, listening to your FM radio, when two stations seem to be fighting for the same frequency and you hear both? This happens when you're driving through an area where two stations using the same (or close to the same) frequencies overlap slightly.

Codes Help Avoid Confusion
Usually, cellular networks work in a similar way. When you call someone, you're assigned a channel for the duration of your call. When you send data over GPRS, your phone looks for an empty channel to use. With WCDMA, voice calls and data connections are each assigned codes, not specific frequency channels - hence the term "Code-Division Multiple Access." The device on the receiving end knows the proper code, and automatically filters out any data that isn't stamped with it. This method frees a lot of space on the network that otherwise wouldn't be available, and it adds security.

Wideband Makes Data Flow Faster
Imagine pouring water out of a bottle. If the bottleneck is narrow, you may have lots of water to pour but it's only going to go as fast as the narrow opening will let it. This is where the "Wideband" part of WCDMA comes in: it becomes more like pouring water out of a vase. It's not that the individual water molecules (or bits of data) move any faster, but much more can be transferred at any given time.
That's a very simplified look at the principles behind WCDMA.

What if WCDMA Isn't Covered?
If your phone uses WCDMA and you enter an area where the networks don't yet support it, the phone are designed to automatically switch to using GPRS or EDGE, whichever is available. This is built in to Nokia models - they're called multimode WCDMA/EDGE terminals.
