Nokia Data Synchronization

Losing your Nokia phone can be a disaster if you lose all your contacts, too. Backing up your data is a smart thing to do, period. Keep your calendar, contacts, tasks and email up-to-date, and make backups of your phone info.
What You Can Do With Data Sync
  • Keep track of your personal and professional appointments and info: calendar, email, company files, customer details and other contacts, to-do lists...
  • Remote synchronization of your personal data over a mobile network connection - even when connecting to a secure enterprise network
  • If you have more than one phone, transfer contacts and data between them
  • Get important messages and files via email - even set it up to check for messages periodically
  • If you happen to lose your phone, you'll have a backup of all your contacts on your PC

How Nokia Data Synchronization Works
Nokia's synchronization technology is based on OMA Data Sync (OMA = Open Mobile Alliance), an open technology that is considered an industry standard. Making sure Nokia's devices are compatible with many manufacturers' software, hardware, and servers saves a lot of headaches. OMA Data Synchronization is a direct evolution from SyncML Data Synchronization.
Synchronization works in two different ways: remote synchronization (when the two devices are too far away from each other for cables or local wireless connections), and local synchronization.
Remote Synchronization
This is used for two devices that are too far away for cables or local wireless connections. OMA Data Sync works over HTTP in wide-area networks like Internet, WCDMA, GPRS, and GSM and can connect you to an Internet address book, corporate calendar, company database or other files and applications. And because OMA Data Sync is the leading protocol for wireless synchronization, it works with many services and programs.

Local Synchronization
Local synchronization works between two devices in close proximity (a mobile phone and a laptop, for example), and can be done using a cable or wireless connection (Bluetooth or infrared), depending on the capabilities of both devices. With a PC, use PC Suite software to connect your phone to your PC, then transfer the information you want: synchronize your Outlook calendar, transfer your images to your PC to clear up space on your phone, or transfer data from the PC to your phone, for example.
